SETAREH FUTURE MASTERS AWARD 2017
This year's winners of the SETAREH FUTURE MASTERS ART AWARD are MORGAINE SCHÄFER & RÓBERT OLAWUYI
Our Future Masters Award 2017 honors for the first time, not one, but two, artists and contemporaries, Morgaine Schäfer and Róbert Olawuyi. Both Schäfer and Olawuyi skillfully make use of (art-)historical sources or the traditional canon of images, reflecting on both the perception and the effect of factual, remembered or imagined images.
Morgaine Schäfer, a recent graduate of the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf, creates photographs using a cognitive approach to the medium of reproduction. Her series of portraits bring together various strands of time and levels of reflection: in the manner of classic portraiture, the artist stages herself in large-format and high-definition photographic prints. As a prop in her hand, she holds a transparency, featuring clear aesthetic images from the past. Schäfer’s arrangements are meticulously thought out in all possible forms and variations, yet still provide great scope for interpretation. Precisely negotiating highly specific and generally valid depictions, Schäfer is able to unite the mechanisms of the image and of the medium, of past and present, of representation and of imagination in a manner that is both poetic and unmasking.
Róbert Olawuyi, former student and teaching assistant at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf, creates video works that emphasise the pictorial while recounting the ebb and flow of visual impressions. Olawuyi is interested in the recognition and the dissipation as well as the balancing act between abstract pattern and unrecogniseable image. In Olawuyi’s work, immaterial aspects intersect with projections in real space, both formally and semantically. His works oscillate between transfiguration and dissolution, creating interferences between abstraction and reminiscence, between vague condition and meaningful interpretation.
We would like to thank and congratulate Morgaine Schäfer and Róbert Olawuyi for visually demonstrating the true essence of Düsseldorf’s genius loci.
We also would like to thank the jury: Eva Birkenstock (director of the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen), Dr Tayfun Belgin (director of the Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum, Hagen), Marion Eisele (exhibition curator) and Dr. Samandar Setareh (Setareh Gallery).
