Installationview, Gregor Gleiwitz, 07.04.2020, Oil on canvas, 45 x 37 cm

SETAREH is pleased to present DE PLUS PRÈS, an exhibition of ten new close-ups by Berlin based artist, Gregor Gleiwitz.

Gleiwitz' very precisely elaborated close-ups contain all aspects of his large-scale paintings. These true miniatures present an imagery between abstraction and almost figurative levels of meaning. Vibrant colour fields are ruptured by scratched, scraped, and painted surfaces as well as wild serpentine curves. The static effect of the soft, warm aura of the colours, defies the movement and mobility of the contours. The glazes are of varying thicknesses, and in some parts, their thinnest layers remind us of erased information and blurred memories, thus making a chronology visible. The titles of Gleiwitz' works depend on the date of their completion. Being created in intensive, continuous processes, his paintings reflect experiences of time, capturing a piece of reality. While painting his hands become independent, leaving even brushes aside.

"My hands have become independent while painting and left brushes aside. They then began - similar to a ceramic - to form the material ... and from the various motions, three-dimensional heads, hands, limbs, sometimes stones from nature emerged - and all without a brush. Like a kind of sculpture in two-dimensional space."
